Being centrally located this is an ideal spot for touring Western Galloway with Stranraer, Newton Stewart, Wigtown and Whithorn all within an 18 mile radius. You can explore our wonderful gardens at Logan, Castle Kennedy Glenwhan and Ardwell or potter round our pretty villages.

On a visit to Wigtown you can browse through the book shops and enjoy a leisurely lunch before checking on the Osprey family which returns here each year to nest and are monitored by webcam which you can watch in the County Buildings.

Further southeast in Whithorn you will find the museum and Visitor Centre where you can learn the story of St Ninian and see some of the relics from that era before walking in his footsteps down the wooded Physgill Glen and along the shore to his cave. The peace and tranquility are well worth the walk.

Known as Scotland’s most exotic garden, this is quite a difference to your usual south west Scottish countryside setting.

You’ll discover plants and trees that are rarely seen in the United Kingdom. Enjoy a peaceful walk through this vibrant and exotic garden, a short drive from Glenalmar Cottage.

Books

Wigtown, Scotland’s National Book Town

Wigtown has held the title of Scotland’s National Book Town since 1998 and hosts a book festival every year. As you can expect there are numerous bookshops with old and new books galore.

You can also watch an osprey family which return to Wigtown each year, and are monitored by webcam, viewable from Wigtown’s county buildings.

Wigtown is a 25 minute drive from Glenalmar Cottage, to the other side of the Machos peninsula.

Whithorn, Scotland’s first Christian community

A destination for historians, Whithorn is the site of the earliest Christian community in Scotland. At The Whithorn Dig, you will find a series of archaeologist sites where findings date back to 6000BC.

The home of St. Ninian, who is known for brining Christianity to Scotland around 397AD.

Whithorn is a 25 minute drive from Glenalmar Cottage, further south of the Machars peninsula.

Whisky

Bladnoch Distillery

Bladnoch Distillery is Scotland’s most southernly whisky distillery. Known as the spirit of the lowlands, Bladnoch is a single malt whisky.

Beaches

Glenalmar Cottage overlooks Luce Bay, so you’re a short meander to your nearest beach, but enjoy a coastal drive and stop of at many beaches around Wigtownshire. You never have to worry about our beaches being over-populated, and it’s common to enjoy strolls on the beach all to yourself.

You’re a 20 minute drive to Scotland’s most southerly golf course St. Medans; a 9 hole links course right on Luce Bay. There’s a lovely beach right next to the golf course, and even non-golfers would love a walk around this area with panoramic sea views.
